Inferno, the first Canticle in Dante’s poetic masterpiece The Divine Comedy, recounts the harrowing journey of a lost traveler who must find his way backto the top of the mountain (Heaven) by first traversing the nine levels of Hell. As the horror of each concentric circle increases, the traveler encounters monsters (human and otherwise) and other fantastical creatures and becomes transformed as he begins to comprehend fully the extent of humanity’s wickedness.
